Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Therapy Group

GAD is diagnosed when you experience at least three of the symptoms below on more days than not:

  • Excessive or exaggerated worry, and difficulty controlling worry about different areas of life  (e.g. health, relationships, finances, possible threats or setbacks)
  • Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge
  • Being easily fatigued
  • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless, unsatisfying sleep)


            GAD affects 6.8 million adults, or 3.1% of the U.S. population, in any given year.

Join a 12-week group therapy utilizing advanced, highly effective CBT techniques for GAD, including:

  • Distinguishing productive vs. unproductive worry, learning strategies to refocus and let go of unproductive worry, or to focus on helpful solutions and coping
  • Identifying and holding on to good reasons to trust (evidence) that all will be well, and that you can cope with what may come, rather than obsessing on fears
  • Letting go of excessive, counter productive "safety behaviors" that consume time and energy and diminish your ability to relax and enjoy life
  • Integrating relaxation and mindfulness to calm worry and to manage anxiety


CBT does not require the use of medications, but is effective with or without medication.

Group Leader

The group will be lead by James Shenk, Ph.D., who has over 30 years of experience in treating anxiety disorders. Dr. Shenk will offer a group in person in his La Jolla office (6-8 members), and will also offer an online teletherapy group (6-10 participants from around California.)
